Wearable Cardioverter Defibrillator: A Lifesaving Technology for Sudden Cardiac Arrest Prevention
The Wearable Cardioverter Defibrillator (WCD) has emerged as a revolutionary device for preventing sudden cardiac death (SCD) in high-risk patients. Unlike implanted defibrillators, a WCD offers non-invasive cardiac monitoring and automatic defibrillation when life-threatening arrhythmias are detected.
The system consists of a lightweight vest equipped with sensors and electrodes connected to a small monitor. It continuously tracks heart rhythms and delivers an electric shock if a fatal arrhythmia, such as ventricular fibrillation, occurs. The device alerts the wearer before shock delivery, allowing conscious patients to abort it if unnecessary.
